"Pantelleria - Archaeology"

The island of Pantelleria confirms itself as a "mine of archaeological finds" from the Roman era. After the discovery of three marble heads in 2003 during the excavation campaign in the San Marco area, the latest discovery in chronological order is an eight-centimeter gold mask, depicting a human face, made in embossed form. The find was located in the same cistern where the head of Emperor Titus was found; in another cistern not far away the other two marble heads depicting Julius Caesar and Agrippina had also previously been recovered.

The cult of the dead

Archaeological Sites: particularly important are the "Sesi", stone tombs unique in the world, megalithic monuments, certainly multiple tombs, built in a spiral growing upwards, and rigidly made with dry stones and the related remains of the first settlement dating back to the late Bronze Age (Neolithic) as well as works dating back to the Phoenician-Punic period such as the Phoenician Acropolis (later Roman) on the San Marco hill where, among other things, they were found, cinerary urns, lacrimatories, glass containers for perfume; the Phoenician tombs in Monastero, the ageless tombs dug into the rock in the Ghirlanda area.

The Sanctuaries, the cisterns, the port and the coins

Interesting are the sanctuaries near Lake Venus and Bugeber, the bell cisterns and the Punic cisterns in Muegen, Behind the Island and in Kania, the port equipped by the Phoenicians with a breakwater (further inland than today's Molo Nasi) and the first structure of the castle and the coins with the effigy of the goddess Tanit, minted by the Phoenicians as a symbol of the autonomy and wealth of the island.
